What guests say
“We were picked up from our accommodation and driven a little way out of town. The five of us then took a short snowshoe hike up the hill. After a bit of waiting, the northern lights appeared too. On the way back we stopped once more to watch them. It was a great tour. We would gladly do it again.”
“It was a lovely walk in a very quiet forest. And we even saw the northern lights. We would definitely book this tour again.”
“Missed the northern lights because of too much cloud cover. But Lapland and Rovaniemi are beautiful. Snow gently falling was so peaceful. The staff were very responsive, patient and kind. Will try to come back to hopefully see the lights next time.”
Discover the forest after dark
Walk on snowshoes through a winter forest near Rovaniemi with your local guide and no more than eight guests. Follow the soft light of your lanterns, stop to listen to the quiet and look for the northern lights under an open sky.
Into the dark, together
You put on snowshoes and follow your guide through the trees. You carry a small lantern that gives a soft yellow light. We keep the light low and do not use bright headlamps. This gives your eyes time to get used to the dark. On a clear night, you can begin to notice the hills and slopes beyond the lantern light.
From the back of the group, you see the others walking between the trees, each carrying a lantern. The soft lights move through the dark forest. This simple scene can feel magical.
Your guide is used to walking in the forest at night and leads the group. They adjust the walking speed and breaks to suit the group. With your guide there, you can explore a place you might not visit alone after dark.
So quiet you can hear yourself breathe
Your guide asks everyone to stop and listen. You may hear only your own breathing. If you are used to the noise of a city, this quiet can feel new and surprising.
On a clear night, you may see stars above the trees. In the moonlight, the snow can be very bright. You may also notice fox or hare tracks in the snow.
Could the northern lights surprise you?
After the forest walk, you reach Lake Sinettäjärvi, where the sky is open in several directions. We watch from the frozen lake, or from the shore if we cannot go onto the ice. During a campfire break, you enjoy Lappish sausages and hot drinks with the group.
If the northern lights appear, watching them can feel like listening to an orchestra. A small glow may grow brighter and spread across the whole sky. The lights can fade or disappear, then suddenly become bright again. Every display is different. That is part of the magic.
The Finnish word for the northern lights, revontulet, means ‘fox fires’. In an old Finnish story, a fox runs across the snowy hills. Its tail brushes the snow and sends sparks into the sky. Those sparks become the northern lights.
