A world of your own for a while
Try ice fishing on Lake Sinettäjärvi near Rovaniemi, away from the crowds. With a guide and no more than eight guests, there is time to fish, talk and enjoy the quiet with the people you came with.
Winter overalls, boots and fishing equipment are included, along with snacks and hot drinks by the campfire. Suitable for guests aged 6 and over, with pickup from accommodation in central Rovaniemi included.
Few experiences make you pause quite like ice fishing here. You sit on a small stool in warm winter overalls, with the deep winter cold around you and the frozen lake stretching towards the forest. It can feel as though your small group has the whole place to itself. Even if you usually find it hard to sit still, slowing down can come naturally here.
Out onto the lake
After pickup, you leave Rovaniemi behind and head to Lake Sinettäjärvi. You put on your winter overalls and boots, then follow your guide through the forest to the ice.
Beyond the trees, the view opens across the frozen lake. In the brief daylight of a clear, bitterly cold midwinter day, the landscape can seem almost suspended in time. There may not even be a bird crossing the sky. In moments without traffic noise or aircraft overhead, there is little to interrupt that stillness.
Your first hole in the ice
Your guide leads you to a place to fish and shows you how to drill through the ice. Then you can try the drill and make your own hole. Your guide also demonstrates how to use the small fishing rod before you lower your line into the water.
Once you have the basics, you can fish at your own pace with the people you came with. Your guide gets the campfire going in the background, leaving you space to enjoy the lake together and offering help when you need it.
The magic is under the ice
You settle onto a stool with the rod in your hand, your line disappearing beneath the ice. You cannot see what is happening below, so you feel for the smallest movement. A faint tug could be a fish.
That possibility stays with you as you sit, giving the quiet a gentle sense of anticipation. There is time to look across the lake, exchange a few words with the people beside you and wait a little longer. A catch is never guaranteed.
As you wait, your thoughts may turn to things you have not had time to reflect on: a question, a difficult decision or an experience that has stayed with you. The quiet of the lake can give those thoughts room, without any need to find an answer.
Warmth by the fire
When the fire is ready, you can take a break from the cold with a hot drink and a snack.
